AMSUSS ‑ Additive manufacturing of super‑duplex materials

The AMSUSS Project, Additive Manufacturing of SUper-duplex Stainless Steels, is a business-driven initiative focusing on process development, specifically for powder bed fusion methods.

Background

One of the serious obstacles preventing wide industrial use of additive manufacturing (AM) in metals and alloys is a lack of materials processed with this technology. It is particularly true for electron beam-based powder bed fusion (E-PBF), where only a few materials are commercially available, which, despite its known advantages, significantly limits the use of the method.

Aim

The purpose of this project is to determine whether stainless steels (SS), and in particular duplex and super-duplex alloys (DSS, SDSS) can be used to extend the portfolio of feedstock materials for metal AM with a focus on E-PBF. The project is led by Sports Tech Research Centre at Mid Sweden University and is conducted together with three companies in different industry areas. The research project is financed by the Knowledge Foundation.
