Alpmema presented in Italy
This summer, the Miun project ALPMEMA was presented at a major conference in Italy. In the project, in which several European universities are participating, the researchers are looking at how meadows are best preserved.
ALPMEMA stands for ALPine mountain hay MEadows Management and was started in 2023 at the Department of Natural Sciences, Design and Sustainable Development (NDH). The project studies protected habitats, more precisely highland hay meadows, that require human care. Among other things, the researchers are looking at how meadows are managed and used in order to be able to see, if possible, what success factors there are in the conservation of these areas. In Europe, the number of hay fields is decreasing, they are decreasing in the Alps as well as in the Swedish mountains.
At the conference in Bologna in June was John Lind, who is an employed doctoral student.
"I presented the project as a whole and from what angles we intend to study the management of the meadows," he says.
Paul van den Brink, who is a project assistant, presented different methods for classifying habitats.
ALPMEMA is a collaboration between Mid Sweden University, American University of Armenia, Armenia, Universität für Bodenkultur Wien, Austria, University of Copenhagen, Denmark and Universität Hohenheim in Germany.
