Human Geography BA (A), Heritage - Peace and Conflict, 7.5 Credits
If history is about with the facts of the past, then heritage is about the values that we ascribe to places and practices of the past, which are linked to questions of identity, politics, and culture. It is not surprising then that heritage is often part of conflict and used to justify aggression. Heritage, however, also provides opportunities for peacebuilding. This course looks at the relationship between heritage, conflict, and peacebuilding through the experience of a variety of contested spaces. It will ask questions such as: How can we use difficult geographies of the past to promote peaceful societies? What role does business, government institutions and ordinary citizens have in building peace?
