Aim

The course aims to give the student a deeper understanding of different designs of electrical machines and electrical drive systems used in both industrial and automotive applications.

Course objectives

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • explain the operating principles and modes of operation of different types of electrical motors,
  • identify parameters in models of electrical machines for analysis of properties under stationary conditions,
  • use simulation software for analysis and calculations of electrical machines in operation,
  • explain the structure, function and properties of electrical and electronic motor drive systems and their components.

Content

The course is an advanced course in electrical machines and drive systems, which covers:

  • Basic and advanced DC and AC theory, and the structure of the three-phase motor and drive.
  • Physical principles for different types of rotating electrical machines such as generators and motors.
  • Function and mode of operation of synchronous and asynchronous machines.
  • Models and simulations for describing the properties of different machines under varying operating conditions.
