Aim

The purpose of the course is to provide the student with advanced knowledge and skills in scientific methods. Special emphasis is placed on the understanding, application, and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative methods.

Course objectives

After completing this course, students should be able to:

- Identify sports-related research problems for qualitative and quantitative data collection and compare different collection methods. 
- Independently organize and analyze data qualitatively and quantitatively. 
- Critically examine the reliability and validity of qualitative and quantitative methods.
- Justify methodological choices based on research questions and study design. 
- Critically review, discuss, and present research questions and methodological choices.
- Explore foundational ethical principles in sports science research.

- Qualitative data analysis
- Bivariate and multivariate statistical analyses
- Practical application of qualitative and quantitative research methods in sports science
- Research process, problemformulation, and study design
- Problematisation of ethical aspects concerning research in sports science

Entry requirements

A Bachelor degree with at least 180 credits, including a degree project of at least 15 credits, in Sports Science, Sports Medicine or Physiotherapy.



OR



A Bachelor degree consisting of at least 180 credits, including a degree project of at least 15 credits, and a minimum of 60 credits in one or more of the following subjects: clinical epidemiology, exercise physiology, testing methods in sports science, kinesiology, biomechanics, coaching and leadership, sports nutrition, sports medicine, training sciences.



AND English course 6 or equivalent.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

A range of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, discussions, practical elements, and webinars will be used. The course will mainly be conducted online and entirely in English. There will be one compulsory campus meeting (combined with the parallel course “Performance and data analysis”).

4101: Part 4 - Written assignment, 1.5 Credits

Individual written quantitative task.

5101: Part 5 - Oral presentation, 2.5 Credits

Campus-based practical examinations.

6101: Part 6 - Oral and written presentation, 3.5 Credits

The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special suport by Mid Sweden Universitys disabilities advisor.

Retaking of passed exams to improve grades is not permitted by Mid Sweden University.
