Aim

The purpose of the course is to provide in-depth theoretical and methodological knowledge that supports the research process in tourism geographies. The purpose of the course is to provide the student a thorough understanding of the various phases of the research process that supports their Master by Research program of study in tourism geographies.

Course objectives

After completed course, the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to plan and design an independent research project.
  • Critically reflect on the scientific questions within a chosen research area related to tourism geography.
  • Compile and synthesize relevant research within the topic selected by the student.
  • Conduct critical and independent assessments of different theoretical and methodological perspectives and positions relevant to the student’s chosen topic.
  • Reflect and gain understanding of the first phase of a research process.

Content

In this course, the student applies previous knowledge from the discipline and earlier courses in the program to enable the planning and design of an independent research project. The student takes part in how a research project is organized, and developed, and, with feedback from active researchers, plans a study with associated theoretical and methodological considerations and delimitations. The central aspect of the course is to stimulate critical reflective thinking and analytical skills regarding theory and method within the chosen research area.

Entry requirements

Admitted to the Research Preparatory Master's Program in Human Sciences, specializing in tourism. Completed courses of 30 credits within the program, of which 15 credits are in quantitative and qualitative methods.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Individual work planned and carried out in collaboration with researchers in the field. Teaching is conducted through supervision. Content and elements may vary depending on the research project and supervisor.

During examinations, attendance is compulsory.

Teaching and feedback can be in English.

Teaching will be through the Mid-Sweden web-based system.

Written and oral presentation of the project's components in agreement with the supervisor/examiner.
