Aim

This course uses two key concepts (migration and mobility) to discuss social, cultural and literary aspects of Swedish culture. By taking a number of texts that embody these key concepts as a starting point, the aim is to give students a basic introduction to contemporary Swedish culture.

Course objectives

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

• describe the concepts of migration and mobility as literary motifs

• describe analytical perspectives on migration and mobility in a Swedish national context and relate these to different literary representations

• demonstrate basic knowledge of literary analysis methods and concepts

Content

Definitions of key concepts.

Basic literary theory.

Basic historical and theoretical perspectives on how political, social, economic and cultural processes influence the shaping of societies in different geographical areas.

Analytical perspectives on mobility and migration and how these concepts can be used to discuss thematic issues in the course literature.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Teaching is in the form of seminars. All seminars are compulsory as they contain examinations in the form of individual presentations and group discussions. You do not need to spend any extra time meeting your fellow students outside these seminars as there is time for discussions and group presentations within the framework of the seminars.

Some seminars may be led by guest teachers but teachers from Mid Sweden University are always present.

Examination form

1000: Written exam, 4 Credits
Grade scale: Three-grade scale
Individual take home exam

2000: Group presentation, 2 Credits
Grade scale: Three-grade scale

3000: Active participation in seminars, 1.5 Credits
Grade scale: Two-grade scale

The course examination is three-part with a individual written take home exam, an oral group assignment and active participation in seminars.


The group assignment is an individual assignment in the sense that it is the individual performance that will be considered. This means that the group's performance does not affect individual students' grades.

The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special support by Mid Sweden University’s disabilities adviser.


Examination restrictions

Students registered on this version of the syllabus are entitled to be examined three (3) times within one (1) year according to this syllabus. Thereafter, the latest version of the syllabus applies.

Course certificates, credit transfers, appeals etc. are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance.

The course is for complementary studies (breadth course). The course can be included in a degree, but not credited as equivalent to Comparative Literature GR (A), which means that it does not provide eligibility for the next progression level in Comparative Literature.
