Aim
The student shall, during the course, acquire basic knowledge of derivatives and integrals with applications as well as of elementary mathematical statistics.
Course objectives
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
- differentiate simple functions,
- solve applied problems using differentiation,
- integrate simple functions,
- solve applied problems using integrals,
- master elementary descriptive statistics,
- carry out calculations concerning random variables and probability density functions,
- apply inference theory in simple cases, and
- use linear regression to solve simple problems.
Content
Logarithm and exponential functions. Trigonometric functions and their graphs. Differentiation of simple functions, products and quotients of functions as well as compositions of functions. Applications of derivatives. Introduction to differential equations. Integration of simple functions. Applications of integrals. Descriptive statistics. Probability theory. Random variables and probability density functions. Inference (point estimation, interval estimation and hypothesis testing). Linear regression.
