Aim
The purpose of the course is that the student should get basic knowledge and skills in environmental science, concepts and perspectives. The course also aims at giving the student basic understanding of energy and energy systems as well as insights regarding the use of natural resources from society's perspective connected to sustainability.
Course objectives
After the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- explain the term energy, based on basic physical relationships
- explain the human use of soil and water and the environmental impact.
- account for and discuss resource issues from a sustainability perspective
- account for the most common existing energy systems and its prerequisites
- account for various human made transport systems and their environmental impact
- account for different sectors of society (land use, housing, energy, industry and transport) and its potential for contributing to a sustainable development.
- show system understanding of environmental science by using data from different sources and make reasonable conclusion based on the data
Content
The course is based on lectures and seminars. The lectures covers energy, energy systems with a certain focus on renewable energy. Connection between renewable energy and their meteorological base is covered. Agriculture, forestry, industry and transports are highlighted. The course also contain sustainable conflicts connected to human need.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Examination form
I100: Assignment with oral presentation, 3.5 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U) or Pass (G)
T200: Written examination, 4 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

Examination restrictions
