Aim

This course aims at providing knowledge in the completion of scientific studies as well as a practical ability to design, conduct, present and defend, as well as review and discuss an equivalent scientific thesis within the subject of sociology.

Course objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be equipped to:

  • independently design a research project, relevant to their field of interest,

  • plan, conduct, present and defend the scientific thesis,

  • review and discuss another equivalent scientific thesis.

Content

The student who chooses to exit the program after one year with a one-year master's degree will use the second half of the second semester to write their 15 ECTS master's thesis. The student applies theoretical and methodological skills to writing an independent scientific thesis. Guided by a designated supervisor, the student independently designs a minor research project relevant to their field of interest. They conduct, report, present, and publicly defend their scientific work, and critically review and discuss another equitable scientific work.

Entry requirements

A bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits in social or behavioural sciences, of which a minimum of 60 credits in sociology. English course 6/English course B from Swedish Upper Secondary School. (Gymnasium) or the equivalent.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Teaching is in the form of supervision. A supervisor will be designated.

1000: Independent Project, 15 Credits
Grade scale: Three-grade scale

2000: Seminar
Grade scale: Two-grade scale

The course is examined through defending the scientific thesis and reviewing another scientific thesis in the public examination. Active participation in the public seminar as well as contact with the supervisor is necessary for grading.

Examination restrictions

Students registered on this version of the syllabus are entitled to be examined three (3) times within one (1) year according to this syllabus. Thereafter, the latest version of the syllabus applies.
