Aim
The aim of this course is to introduce, explore and examine basic concepts, theories, models and state-of-the art knowledge in management and economics of tourism. The course emphasizes critical perspectives and contemporary issues as well as applied theories and methodologies.
Course objectives
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- Understand the main state-of-the-art theories and models in management and economics in tourism.
- Identify and comprehend the core components of economic conceptualization of tourism.
- Comprehend and critically discuss the various dimensions of the interrelationship between businesses and tourists.
- Critically analyze tourism supply and demand both at the micro and macro level.
- Apply basic methods and models in the management and economics of tourism.
Content
The course includes lectures, seminars and laboratory work on theoretical and methodological aspects in the management and the economics of tourism. Issues related to supply and demand on the micro and macro level, tourism products and consumption related behaviour of tourists and businesses, destination management, and the economic impacts of tourism are covered in the course. As a core component throughout the course, students will critically discuss, reflect and apply main concepts in various exercises.
Entry requirements
A bachelor' s degree of at least 180 credits (ECTS) and English course 6/English course B from Swedish Upper Secondary School (Gymnasium) or the equivalent.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
Lectures, seminars and laboratory work.
Teaching will be through the Mid Sweden University's web-based system.

For home examinations or other written assignments, a complementary oral presentation may be requested by the teacher. The student should hence demonstrate the necessary knowledge to ensure that the student is the actual sender and the author of the written work.
The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special support by Mid Sweden University's disabilities adviser.

Students admitted to the previous version of this course have the right to graduate 3 times within 1 year according to that syllabus. Thereafter the students are transferred to this syllabus.

Teaching takes place in English. The course is given within the program Master in tourism science, 60 credits, Master in tourism, 120 credits and Master by research specialization in tourism science, 120 credits.
