Aim
The course aims at developing a deeper knowledge and understanding in tourism studies. Through the process of independently conducting research and writing a scientific thesis, the students can apply and develop their theoretical and methodological skills.
Course objectives
Upon completion of the course, the students shall be able to:
- Plan, develop, and complete a high-quality scientific text.
- Under supervision, finalize a scientifically-relevant work.
- Be in a position to critically read scientific papers and provide constructive commentary through the opposition of a peer’s work.
- Relate the contents of the scientific text to earlier acquired practical skills and knowledge.
- Communicate knowledge verbally and in writing, with various audiences in mind.
Content
In this course, the student conducts independent research and writes a thesis on a theme chosen by him-/herself. This includes an in-depth study that encompasses theory and methodology, both of which are applied to empirical work. The whole process is supervised by an assigned instructor.
Entry requirements
A bachelor' s degree of at least 180 credits (ECTS) and English course 6/English course B from Swedish Upper Secondary School (Gymnasium) or the equivalent.
Students must have also completed all preceding classes for the Masters namely: Tourism in a Changing World, 7,5 hp; Tourism and the Sustainability Agenda, 7,5 hp; Quantitative Methods in Tourism, 7,5 hp; Qualitative Methods in Tourism, 7,5 hp; Individual Reading Course, 7,5 hp; Applied Research through field work, 15 hp.
In exceptional cases permission for a course substitution may be granted following permission from the instructor responsible for the thesis course.
Selection rules and procedures
The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
Teaching is carried out by seminars, and continuous supervision. Students must conduct a formal opposition of a peer’s work and be able to respond to an opposition from another student.

1000: Independent Project, 30 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with distinction (VG)
The course is examined through a public defence of the individual scientific thesis, in combination with being opponent on another thesis.

The examiner has the right to offer alternative examination arrangements to students who have been granted the right to special support by Mid Sweden University's disabilities adviser.

Other information
The Masters’ program is delivered in English and, as such, students are normally expected to be able to complete all their work, including their thesis, in English. Nevertheless, Swedish students do have the right to choose to write their final thesis in Swedish.
