Comprehensive health insurance is a requirement for receiving a work permit or residence permit in Sweden. It must be valid for at least a year from the date on which an individual has moved to Sweden. The health insurance can be either public or private, and should be able to cover the cost of emergency and other medical care as well as hospital stays, dental care and any needed transport home for medical reasons. EU citizens have the European Health Insurance Card, which must be brought with them when moving to Sweden.
If a residence permit is issued for more than one year, a notification must be made to Försäkringskassan. Read more at Försäkringskassan.
