Background
Mikael Gidlund received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Mid Sweden University, Sundsvall, Sweden, in 2000 and 2005, respectively. In 2005, he served as a Visiting Researcher with the Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen, Norway. From 2006 to 2007, Dr. Gidlund worked as a Research Engineer and Project Manager with Acreo AB, Kista, Sweden, where he oversaw wireless broadband communication projects. He then joined Nera Networks AS, Bergen, as a Senior Specialist and Project Manager, focusing on next-generation IP-based radio solutions from 2007 to 2008.
From 2008 to 2014, Dr. Gidlund was a Senior Principal Scientist and Global Research Area Coordinator for wireless technologies at ABB Corporate Research, Västerås, Sweden. In this role, he led efforts in technology and strategy planning, standardization, and innovation within the wireless automation domain, pioneering industrial wireless sensor networks. Since 2014, he has been a Full Professor of Computer Engineering at Mid Sweden University and currently holds an adjunct professorship at Beijing Jiaotong University, China.
Dr. Gidlund has an extensive publication record, with over 200 scientific articles in refereed journals and conferences. He is an inventor with over 20 patents (granted and pending) in wireless communications. His research interests encompass wireless communication and networks, wireless sensor networks, medium access protocols, and security.
As recognized leader in his field, Dr. Gidlund received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Industrial IT in 2014. He also co-authored the paper that won the 2022 IEEE Sweden VT-COM-IT Joint Chapter Best Student Journal Paper Award. An IEEE Senior Member, he chaired the IEEE IES Technical Committee on Cloud and Wireless Systems for Industrial Applications from 2019 to 2021. Dr. Gidlund is an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Industrial Electronics, and the Journal of Information Processing Systems. Additionally, he serves as an Area Editor for SENSORS (MDPI).
Dr Gidlund is frequently invited to speak at international conferences and symposia, where he shares his expertise and insights on wireless communication technologies for verticals.
